Match story — a penalty each, then Sa'Id settles it with five minutes left

Motherwell opened the Premiership season with a 2-1 win at Easter Road (attendance 17,440, referee Steven Mclean), and it was a game of spot-kicks until it wasn't. Lukas Fadinger scored from the penalty spot in the 40th minute to send Motherwell in 1-0 up at half-time. Martin Boyle levelled from the spot in the 56th, a minute after Oscar Priestman was booked. The winner came in the 85th minute from Ibrahim Sa'Id, with Dylan Williams credited with the assist, and it arrived after a burst of changes: Jamie Knight-Lebel and Tawanda Maswanhise on for Jake Girdwood-Reich and Willy Gabriel Vogt Veigantes in the 66th minute, Alexander Lowry for Regan Charles-Cook in the 75th, Ewan Wilson and Olly Whyte for Emmanuel Longelo and Priestman in the 82nd.

Motherwell set up 4-4-2 against Hibernian's 3-4-3 and collected three bookings — Priestman, Fadinger and Tom Sparrow — to Josh Mulligan's one for the hosts.

Match figure

What the numbers say — outshot 19 to 9, but the xG was a coin toss

Hibernian had 19 shots to Motherwell's 9 and 9 corners to 2, and 2 of Motherwell's shots were blocked against 8 of Hibernian's. Motherwell had 52% of the ball and completed 452 of 505 passes. Shots on target were close, 5 for Motherwell against 6 for Hibernian, and both goalkeepers made 3 saves.

The xG says the shot count flattered Hibernian: football-data.co.uk has it 2.00 for Motherwell and 1.92 for the hosts, a difference of +0.08 and 1.44 expected points. Two penalties do a lot of work in that number, but on chance quality this was even.

The market had Motherwell as clear outsiders. Bet365's pre-match prices (Hibernian 2.20, draw 3.40, Motherwell 3.10) gave Motherwell a 30.1% implied win probability and 1.18 expected points. Three points is 1.82 above what the market expected, the best return against the market Motherwell would post in the season's first seven matches.

Personnel and usage — Fadinger and Sa'Id carried the shooting

Fadinger had 3 shots with 2 on target and scored the penalty; Charles-Cook also had 3 shots with 1 on target before coming off in the 75th minute; Sa'Id had 2 shots, 1 on target, and the winner. Lowry hit the target with his only shot in an estimated 15 minutes. Williams, at left-back, provided the assist. For Hibernian, Owen Elding had 5 shots and Nathan Lowe 4, with 2 on target each.

Motherwell used 16 players. Alex Paulsen, Martin Moormann, Williams, Sparrow, Fadinger and Sa'Id played the full estimated 90; Girdwood-Reich and Vogt Veigantes went off at 66', Charles-Cook at 75', Longelo and Priestman at 82'. Minutes are estimated from substitution times and do not include stoppage time.

Where this leaves the season — three points, and an early sign that Motherwell would live on the edge

One match in, the season line is 1-0-0, 3 points, 2 scored, 1 conceded, xG 2.00 for and 1.92 against. The table block in this pack is the standings as fetched on 25 September, not on opening day, so it says nothing useful about matchday one and is left out here.

Limitations

One match, one vendor's box score and xG model, and two penalties inflating both teams' xG. Minutes are estimated from substitution clocks.

Takeaway

Motherwell won a game Hibernian dominated on shot volume, and the xG (2.00 to 1.92) says the quality of chances was level once the penalties are counted. The market gave Motherwell a 30% chance of this, so three points at 3.10 is the kind of result a season needs a few of. Fadinger's spot-kick and Sa'Id's late finish were the difference, and the 19 shots conceded were the warning.
